Today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the historic appointment of Court of Appeals Justice Martin J. Jenkins — who would become the first openly LGBTQ and only the third Black man to serve on the California Supreme Court.
Justice Jenkins retired last year as an associate justice of the California Court of Appeals. He will fill the vacancy left by Justice Ming Chin, who retired in August and, according to the Los Angeles Times, was our state Supreme Court’s most conservative member appointed by Republican Governor Pete Wilson.
In his announcement speech, Justice Jenkins said, “It has not been easy. But I want to say to those young people today who may be watching…that I am not here in spite of the struggle. I am here because of the struggle.“
