Marcus Bush, Bylaws, and Board Elections

Democrats for Equality,

February is Black History Month.

Last night, CBS 8 interviewed newly-elected Councilmember Marcus Bush on his historic election as the first Afro-Latino and first LGBTQ elected in National City.

We also posted an article from NBC News on our club’s Facebook page honoring 16 queer Black pioneers who made history.

Friendly reminder… yes, we have an upcoming club meeting this Saturday at 2:00pm — but, we also have our regularly scheduled club meeting this month, too!

So if you’re unable to join us this Saturday, then be sure to join us on Thursday, February 18th at 6:30pm.

You can register for both February meetings at the Zoom link here. You might have to register for each individually, but you can use the drop down menu to select the meeting you wish to register for on the registration page.

At our regularly scheduled meeting on February 18th, we will consider adopting a Bylaw amendment regarding rescinding and reconsidering previously-made club endorsements. This would add an additional section into our club’s Standing Rules for Endorsements, and would be used in the event we find ourselves having to reconsider endorsements, ratings, or positions of the club.

Read the proposed February 18th Bylaws changes here.

Some of our longtime club members have asked that this be re-adopted, as I’m told that this used to be in our Bylaws at some point. However, I’ve looked back at past copies dating back to 2015 and wasn’t able to find whatever the specific language was.

The language proposed is almost verbatim language used by the San Diego County Democratic Party.

So, just to make sure our I’s are crossed and our T’s are dotted, it’s best practice for us to formally consider voting on them again rather than just stuffing random language into our Bylaws willy-nilly. I mean… who does that, amirite?

Finally, it’s that time again for us to conduct our annual elections for positions on our executive board. All positions are two-year terms unless otherwise stated. For those wondering… yes, you’re stuck with me for another year.

Those positions up for election include:

  • Vice President for Political Action
  • Controller
  • Sergeant-at-Arms
  • North Coastal Area Director (1-year term)
  • North Inland Area Director
  • East Area Director
  • Metro West Area Director, and
  • 2 At-Large Directors

Should you wish to serve as a member of the executive board, please e-mail our Nominations Committee at nominations@democratsforequality.org

Nominees for our executive board must have been dues-paid members for 90 days prior to taking office at our regularly scheduled club meeting next month on Thursday, March 18th, 2021.

I’ve appointed our Immediate Past President and Chair of our local Democratic Party, Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, to serve as Chair of our Nominations Committee. Will comes highly-recommended and I’m told has experience.

I love you all,

Ryan Trabuco (he/him/his)
