For Many, Housing Can’t Wait

Democrats for Equality,

With the Democratic National Convention taking place the same week as our regularly scheduled meeting in August, we will not be meeting on our regular date next month.

Instead, we will be holding a special meeting on Saturday, August 1st at 2:00pm which has previously been noticed on our endorsement calendar. The meeting will again take place over Zoom, and we’ll have that link out for you as we get closer.

We will be engaging on a number of endorsement considerations, not the least of which is the City of San Diego’s proposed housing bond that will be on the ballot this November.

Typically, at least in recent election cycles, it has been our club’s practice to wait until our state and county party has weighed in on which measures and propositions to support or oppose.

Lately, we have been a little more proactive by offering unanimous support for ACA 5 (which is now Proposition 16), and last year we stepped up early to support the proposed independent commission on police practices in the City of San Diego. I don’t believe the police commission has an official measure identifier yet (i.e. Measure A, Measure B, etc.).

Housing, of course, affects everyone. Our club’s executive board felt the proposed housing bond rose to that extra level worth considering. Here’s a fact sheet from the Housing Federation on the proposed ballot measure.

Also, we will be considering endorsements for Chula Vista Elementary School Board Seats 2 and 4, Vallecitos Water District Division 5, San Marcos City Council District 4, and Lemon Grove City Council.

It should be worth noting that Lemon Grove has two seats up this year for City Council. We have already endorsed Councilmember David Arambula as a friendly incumbent, so we will only consider endorsing for the other available seat. We’ve also endorsed Mayor Racquel Vasquez for re-election. Racquel is a rockstar, and we love her.

Finally, we’ve been working with Terra Lawson-Remer’s campaign for Supervisor to help sponsor a day of action for club members to help her in the most important local campaign this cycle.

Dems 4 Equality will host a phonebank next month on Wednesday, August 26th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. We want to get the word out about this early so y’all can save the date in your calendars.

RSVP for this phonebank event here.

I love you all,
