Democrats for Equality,
Last night’s totally-not-overly-complicated endorsement meeting via Zoom (I hate Zoom) resulted in several new additions to our list of club recommendations for this 2020 election season!
We passed and have now officially endorsed in a number of post-primary races on consent, including Kate Schwartz for State Assembly District 75, Terra Lawson-Remer for County Board of Supervisors in District 3, and Sabrina Bazzo for San Diego Unified District A.
Terra’s election to the Board of Supervisors presents the opportunity of a generation — a Democratic majority — given the stalwart control by Republicans on the County Board for decades.
Marcus’s election as a Councilmember would make history in National City, as the first openly-LGBTQ councilmember (and one of the first openly-bi elected officials in San Diego County), first millennial, and first Afro-Latino.
Jose’s election would represent a similar sea change of progressive public policy, millennial leadership, and diversity in a city where nearly 60% of the population is Latino. Jose has come within a razor-thin-margin of less than 80 votes of winning a city council seat in 2016 and 2018. Third time’s the charm, so let’s make it happen for both of these outstanding candidates.
Finally, despite passionate support on each side of the contest for San Diego Unified District E, featuring Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne and Dr. LaWana Richmond, the club ultimately decided to not issue an endorsement in this contest. Each have a wide array of support from within their respective communities and San Diego would be served well should either of them prevail in November.
Thank you again to all our club members who joined us, and we’ll let you know soon about what’s on the agenda for next month’s meeting, scheduled for Thursday, June 18th. We’ll definitely try and make sure we get the meeting started closer to 6:30pm next time!
Wear your masks! The faster we get out of this pandemic and onto some sort of normalcy, the faster we can get back to doing in-person meetings and not have to use Zoom! (shudder…)
I love you all,
San Diego Democrats for Equality
