Club Meeting This Thursday + AIDS Walk

Democrats for Equality,

Friendly reminder about our club meeting this Thursday, September 19th at the Joyce Beers Community Center in Hillcrest (3900 Vermont Street).

We will again be starting our meeting at a special time — 6:30pm — so we can get through the endorsements we have scheduled (calendar here).

Last weekend, several of our club members spent the better part of Saturday attending the South Bay Pride Art & Music Festival where we registered voters and promoted our upcoming club meeting this week.

The importance of showing up and being active in the South Bay is worth repeating. There are far too many neighborhoods, communities, and voters that we may take for granted, but whose lives are clearly affected every day by the horrors of the Trump administration.

Locally, we as mentioned last week, there is an effort to attack our community in Chula Vista by a far-right hate group called MassResistance, and their efforts have been given a very loud microphone by Trump Republican Mike Diaz who currently serves on the Chula Vista city council.

Mayor Mary Salas and Councilmember Steve Padilla should be commended for standing strong for community, for equality, and for love. We thank both of them for their steadfast support, however we still have much work to do.

Later this month, San Diego Democrats for Equality will launch a team of runners and walkers for the 30th Annual AIDS Walk & Run on Saturday, September 28th. Let’s help raise funds to fight HIV/AIDS in our community!

If you want to join our team to walk or run, please join our team page here!

So, far it’s only me… as of 11:56pm on Monday night… not that I don’t mind walking by myself, but it would definitely be nice to have some club members to walk with!

If you’re unable to walk or run with us, you can still donate to our team. We’ve pledged to raise $1,000, and we are at — well, we’re not close to that goal yet — but I’m confidant you can help us get there!

Last month, we talked about ranked-choice voting. Our friends at the San Diego County Young Democrats and the San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action have already embraced this style for their endorsement recommendations.

A number of club members have been asking — nay, pleading with me by e-mail, voicemail, and carrier pigeon — to adopt ranked-choice voting for our endorsements.

As such, we will certainly have a discussion about it at our meeting this Thursday. It was also brought to my attention that we may need to amend our bylaws to adopt this procedure, so I have included proposed Bylaws language here including language for ranked-choice voting.

I also included proposing to change the “Acceptable” rating moniker to “Qualified” much like the County Democratic Party did a couple of years ago. “Unacceptable” is open to interpretation. Changing it to “Unqualified” I suppose works, but we could propose to change it to something much more… I dunno… negative, perhaps? “Reject” comes to mind, but now it feels though I’m rambling.

Of course, it doesn’t matter what I think. The question is… what do you think? Let me know, and we’ll discuss on Thursday. We won’t be voting on the changes at this week’s meeting, as it is just a discussion item.

And now, a couple more things…

  • Our club-rated candidate Will Moore, running for Council District 1, is holding a campaign walk on Saturday, September 21 at 10am. Breakfast snacks and beverages will be provided. For more information, please contact
  • SAVE THE DATE: Thursday, October 10th at 5:00pm is the upcoming Democratic presidential town hall on LGBTQ issues and we’ve organized a watch party with HRC San Diego and the San Diego County Democratic Party! We’ll be getting together at Uptown Tavern in Hillcrest. For more information, check out the Facebook event page.
  • SAVE THE DATE: Our next Freedom Awards extravaganza will be held on Saturday, January 11th! Venue and details are pending but we wanted to plant the flag early on your calendars so you’re aware!

And, two more items to keep aware of…

This Saturday at 12:00pm, longtime club member Jeri Dilno will be honored with an honorary street naming at 4200 Texas Street in North Park. Jeri has been a legendary figure in our community and political circles for decades, and she is a past president of our club (our 5th club president, actually). Let’s make sure we are all there in attendance to show our support for this special occasion.

Finally, save the date for Sunday, October 6th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm as we come together one last time to remember our friend and longtime club member, Cindy Green. The Celebration of Life will be held at the Pacific Beach Woman’s Club, 1721 Hornblend Street, San Diego 92109. Join us as we share and remember fond, heartfelt memories to one of our dearest friends.

Live Long and Prosper,

Ryan Trabuco
