Democrats for Equality,
Y’all — we are just a day away from Trump being out of the White House!
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris officially take over tomorrow, January 20th at 12:01pm Eastern time, which would be 9:01am our time.
Speaking of our VP-elect, she officially resigned from the U.S. Senate yesterday. Governor Newsom also formally appointed Alex Padilla as her successor, becoming the first Latino to represent California in the Senate.
Governor Newsom also formally nominated Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber as our next Secretary of State. Pending confirmation by the state legislature, Dr. Weber officially takes over in early-to-mid February becoming our state’s first African American Secretary of State.
With all the excitement happening this week, don’t forget about our club meeting THIS THURSDAY, January 21st at 6:30pm. We’ll be meeting via Zoom.
We are hoping to dive right in with some non-campaign and non-election-related club business.
The San Diego County Democratic Party recently voted to split our North County area into two (North Coastal and North Inland), for the purpose of having an easier time handling the amount of North County endorsement considerations moving forward.
Our first Bylaws proposal that we will consider in January will look to codify those changes for our club. This would add an additional North County-area seat onto our executive board as well as an additional associate member for the club who would represent Dems 4 Equality at party area meetings.
The second change to our Bylaws will consider will be an update to LGBTQ identifying language. Currently, references to “LGBT” or where it’s specifically spelled out as either “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender…” we want to update for more inclusive identifying language. There are a couple places in our bylaws where it references “GLBT” and “LGBTQ+” so there is no uniformity either.
For example, our sister clubs (Stonewall Democratic Club in Los Angeles, and Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club in San Francisco) specifically use “LGBTQ” or “LGBTQIA and Feminist communities” as uniform identifying language throughout their Bylaws.
Again, this second change would be more cosmetic, only updating the identifying language seen throughout the Bylaws.
Finally, with the two areas in the North, it has caused a split in our club’s membership numbers in North County. For now, we will continue to have representation in the North Coastal area at our local party meetings.
However… we need to increase our membership in North County to ensure our club has enough members for us to appoint a club associates for both areas.
For all of our club members in North County, I’m asking you to help us bring one new member into our club so we can increase our membership, and ensure that Dems 4 Equality has a voice, a vote, and representation across North County.
If we can do this before the end of the month, we can petition our party’s executive board for the extra club associate.
Let’s not forget, North County will be home to some exciting campaigns in 2022 — not the least of which are likely targeted races for State Senate (Pat Bates is termed out) and County Supervisor (Jim Desmond gotta go!)
Again, help us increase our membership in North County.
Of course, if you need to join or “renew” your lapsed membership from June/July, please visit democratsforequality.org/membership.
I love you all,
Ryan Trabuco (he/him/his)
