Democrats for Equality,
Next month, we will conduct our club’s annual elections for a number of positions on our executive board.
Those positions up for election include:
- Vice President for Resource Development
- Board Member At-Large
- Board Member At-Large
- North Area Representative
- South Area Representative
Nominees for club executive board positions must have been dues-paid members for 90 days prior to their taking office at our club meeting on March 19th, 2020. That would mean that you would have needed to be a member before December 20th, 2019.
Should you wish to serve as a member of the executive board, please e-mail our Nominations Committee at email@example.com.
I’ve appointed our Immediate Past President and County Democratic Party Chair Will Rodriguez-Kennedy to serve as Chair of the Nominations Committee. Will comes highly recommended and I’m told has experience.
Yours truly will be running for a full-term as Club President — and, that’s all the campaigning I’m going to do here. Just wanted to throw that out into the ether and let everyone know. So, feel free to nominate me for re-election if your heart so desires.
Our next club meeting will be on Thursday, February 20 at our special time of 6:30pm. We will have a discussion/action about permanently moving the meeting to 6:30pm — I think it’s been refreshing to start a little earlier, but let’s open it up to everyone to discuss.
Also, we will revisit the ranked-choice voting section of the bylaws regarding the limit to only three rounds. Another update to our bylaws includes codifying the Gloria Johnson Feminist Leadership Awards into the section regarding the Freedom Awards.
Apparently, as I was re-reading and checking the bylaws we somehow never actually added it in, so we will formally vote to include that language as well.
Speaking of additional awards, there’s been a number of ideas about adding one named for Cindy Green and Joanne Climie.
Instead of trying to randomly throw something together and pitch some honorific description of what it would be, I would like you to let me know your thoughts about adding an additional award named after Cindy and Joanne — two legendary club members whom we lost last year. Someone suggested updating/changing the name of the Eleanor Roosevelt Award, but we can’t do anything without bringing this forward for a club discussion.
Another topic we will be discussing and taking action on, as proposed by executive board member Michelle Krug, is voting on whether our club should become an organizational affiliate of CARA (California Alliance for Retired Americans). CARA is a statewide organization that unites retired workers and community groups to win social and economic justice, full civil rights, and a better, more secure future for ourselves, our families, and future generations.
Our friends at the San Diego Labor Democratic Club and the Rancho Bernardo Democratic Club are organizational affiliates, as are 16 other Democratic clubs from around the state.
Last on the agenda for February’s meeting, we’ll hear an informational presentation from a representative on Census 2020. The Los Angeles Times reported recently, that California is on track to lose a congressional seat. Ensuring a fair count is tantamount to help stave off losing a possible second district, depending on reapportionment.
Finally, ballots drop next week — so be on the look out for our voter guide! A full list of our 2020 endorsements can be found here. Like last year, we are also preparing a printer-friendly version of our guide. We should have all that up on our website by the end of this week. Early voting starts Monday!
I love you all,
San Diego Democrats for Equality
