CADEM Pre-Endorsement & LGBTQ History Month

Democrats for Equality,

Can you believe we’re already into October!? There is a lot going on this month, too.

October is LGBTQ History Month. First celebrated in 1994, October includes National Coming Out Day on October 11th, and the first two national marches for LGBT rights in Washington D.C. occurred in October in 1979 and 1987, respectfully.

Of course, our club has much to celebrate throughout our history here in San Diego. What started as near-secret meetings in living rooms, has blossomed into what our club is today.

To help reflect on that history, a couple weeks ago, we honored longtime member and — the 5th president of our club — Jeri Dilno with an honorary street. Jeri has been a legendary figure in our community and political circles for decades, having helped organize the San Diego Pride march in 1975.

Our members make history. You can argue that no one has played a role in making that history more so than Jeri Dilno.

Before I forget, we definitely want to thank all of those club members who made it out to AIDS Walk last weekend. Because of your efforts, our club raised over $1,400! Very much appreciated!

This Saturday, October 5th, the California Democratic Party’s pre-endorsement conference will be held in Region 20, which includes Assembly Districts 77, 78, 79, and 80. Doors open for the Region 20 conference at 2:00pm, and will be held at the San Diego Education Association at 10393 San Diego Mission Road, San Diego, CA 92108.

Our Regional Director Michelle Krug is asking for volunteers to step up and help with check-in and counting of the ballots. If you’d like to volunteer to help, please give her a call at 619-917-9343.

For more information about the pre-endorsement conference, please check out the CADEM website here.

If you live in Assembly District 76 or Assembly District 71, your pre-endorsement conferences are in different regions, and will be held on different days:

  • AD 76 is in Region 18, and will be meeting Saturday, October 5th at 10:00am at Shorecliffs Middle School, 240 Via Socorro, San Clemente 92672.
  • AD 71 is in Region 19, and will be meeting Sunday, October 6th at 2:30pm at Democrats of Hemet-San Jacinto, 530 1/2 Florida Street, Hemet 92543.

Speaking of ballots, at our last meeting we introduced proposed Bylaws language here including language for ranked-choice voting.

I also included proposing to change the “Acceptable” rating moniker to “Qualified” much like the County Democratic Party did a couple of years ago. “Unacceptable” is open to interpretation. Changing it to “Unqualified” I suppose works, but we could propose to change it to something much more… I dunno… negative, perhaps? “Reject” comes to mind, but now it feels though I’m rambling.

Our friends at the San Diego County Young Democrats and the San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action have already embraced this style for their endorsement recommendations.

A number of club members have been asking — nay, pleading with me by e-mail, voicemail, and carrier pigeon — to adopt ranked-choice voting for our endorsements. Presumably, once these our voted on at our next meeting, they will take effect, and we will adopt that style moving forward.

Speaking of our next meeting, we have decided to split October into two meetings: Thursday, Oct. 17 and Thursday, Oct. 24. Both meetings will be held at 6:30pm at the Joyce Beers Community Center in Hillcrest.

For what it’s worth, my birthday is on October 21st between both meetings, so I expect there will be cake, presents, singing, and much adulation for yours truly. You can’t buy my love, but you certainly can try at our club meeting on the 17th.

HA — I’m only kidding about most of that!

I am serious about the cake though.

Possibly the presents, too.

Moving on… two more items to keep aware of…

Thursday, October 10th at 5:00pm is the upcoming Democratic presidential town hall on LGBTQ issues and we’ve organized a watch party with HRC San Diego and the San Diego County Democratic Party! We’ll be getting together at Uptown Tavern in Hillcrest. For more information, check out the Facebook event page.

Finally, Our next Freedom Awards extravaganza will be held on Saturday, January 11th! Venue and details are pending but we wanted to plant the flag early on your calendars so you’re aware!

I love you all,
