ACA 5 and Regular Club Meeting Next Week!

Democrats for Equality,

Results have been posted from the caucus-level election of Bernie and Biden delegates for the upcoming 2020 Democratic National Convention.

We want to congratulate club members Rebecca PhilpottCipriano VargasGloria ConejoJose Caballero, and board member Evlyn Andrade on their wins!

Statewide, California Democrats will send 495 delegates and 35 alternates to the Democratic National Convention later this year.

This week, a significant vote was taken in our state legislature regarding efforts to repeal Proposition 209.

Assembly Constitutional Amendment (ACA) 5, authored by legendary Assemblywoman Dr. Shirley Weber, would repeal provisions that were adopted in 1996 that have had a discriminating effect in state contracting, hiring, and education.

As Dr. Weber noted, “Californians have built the fifth largest and strongest economy in the world, but too many hardworking Californians are not sharing in our state’s prosperity–particularly women, families of color, and low-wage workers.”

On Wednesday, ACA 5 passed the Assembly on a multi-partisan vote of 60-12, and now heads to the Senate. All 5 of our local Democratic assemblymembers voted in-support.

Although our club has not taken a position on this measure, I would like to see us do so at our club meeting next week on Thursday, June 18.

So, here’s a friendly reminder about our club meeting via Zoom next Thursday at 6:30pm. We will send out registration info early next week.

In addition to considering support for ACA 5, we will consider endorsements for Carlsbad City Council Districts 2 and 4, and Escondido City Council Districts 2, 3, and 4.

I love you all,

Ryan Trabuco
